The Blood Bank at SPMM Hospital was founded in the year 2002 and was upgraded to a ‘Components Blood Bank’ in 2022. SPMM Blood Bank is licensed by the Drugs Controller of Tamil Nadu.The Department of Blood Bank encourages blood donors to donate and also helps people find blood donors in time of need.SPMM Blood Bank is a well equipped for component preparation, screening and storage.
BLOOD STORAGE AVAILABLE
- Whole human Blood – Stored at 2°C – 4°C for 35 days
- Packed RBC – Stored at 2°C – 4°C for 42 days
- Fresh Frozen plasma – Stored at 40°C for one year
- Platelet Concentrate – Stored at 20°C – 22°C for 5days from the day of collection with agitation
- Cryoprecipitate – At -80°C for one year
SCREENING TESTS DONE ON THE BLOOD COLLECTED
- HbsAg – Australia Antigen. Hepatitis B virus that causes jaundice
- HCV – Hepatitis C virus that causes jaundice
- HIV I&II – That causes AIDS
- VDRL – That causes Syphilis
- MP/MF – That causes malarial fever
Criteria for Donor Selection
The Donor shall fulfill the following requirements, namely
- The donor shall be in the age group of 18 – 60 years
- The donor have to weigh 45 kg and above for 350ml donation and 50kg and above for 450ml donation.
- Haemoglobin shall not be less than 12.5 g/dL
- The donor shall be free from acute respiratory diseases or any skin diseases or disease transmissible by blood.
- Temperature and Pulse rate of the donor should be normal.
- Pregnant women should not donate blood
- Interval of Blood Donation should be three months between first donation and second donation.
